  • Olympic debutant Thomas Krol of the Netherlands grabbed gold in the men's 1,000m speed skating competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics on Friday. The 29-year-old Dutch clocked a winning time of one minute and 7.92 seconds.
  • Johannes Thingnes Boe handed Norway another gold medal in the men's 15km mass start biathlon in 38 minutes and 14.4 seconds. This is the fourth gold for the 28-year-old Boe, who also won the mixed relay 4x6km, men's 4x7.5km relay and 10km sprint, and a bronze in the men's 20km individual.
  • France's Justine Braisaz-Bouchet claimed her first gold medal at Beijing 2022 after winning the women's 12.5km mass start biathlon. Braisaz-Bouchet missed four shots but she managed to take the title in 40 minutes and 18 seconds.
  • Construction has started on the largest station of an express line to connect Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports.More

  • The election for the chief executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, originally scheduled for March 27, will be postponed to May 8 due to the COVID-19 epidemic, HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Friday.  
  • China will tighten regulations against excessive COVID-19 epidemic control measures, said its top economic planner Friday. No authorities may prohibit people from low-risk areas from returning to their hometowns or arbitrarily expand the range of medium- and high-risk areas.
  • The eastern Chinese city of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province reported six confirmed COVID-19 cases and eight asymptomatic carriers, in the first 15 hours on Friday. Over 6,200 medical workers from other parts of the province have been sent to Suzhou to help accelerate its mass testings.

  • The first two-way China-Europe freight train route linking east China's port city of Qingdao in Shandong Province with Mannheim in Germany entered service on Friday. 
  • Reacting to the US’s decision to add WeChat and AliExpress to its list of markets for counterfeiting and piracy, foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that "China always attaches high importance to the protection of intellectual property rights. The progress we have achieved in recent years is witnessed by all." 
  • Commenting on the US allegation that Russia is "preparing to launch an attack against Ukraine in the coming days," foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that "the credibility of the US intelligence community has been tested on many occasions, including Iraq and Ukraine."

  • China's commercial real estate investment market is expected to surpass the 300-billion-yuan (US$47.37 billion) mark in 2022, according to a latest forecast by global property consultancy CBRE. The achievement will extend the market's double-digit growth phase for another year amid continuously improving sentiment among both sellers and buyers. More
  • Airbus plans to deliver the 600th A320 family aircraft assembled at its Asia final assembly line in north China's Tianjin Municipality in 2022, said Airbus China Friday. 
  • Electric car maker Tesla launched a recall of 26,047 vehicles in China due to safety risks. The recall, initiated by Tesla (Shanghai) Co Ltd, involves 12,003 Model 3 vehicles and 14,044 Model Y vehicles produced in China between Dec. 28, 2020, and Jan. 15, 2022.
  • Swiss food giant Nestle was cautious about its 2022 targets in the face of rising costs, despite robust results thanks to its shift toward the booming vegetarian market. Like its British competitor Unilever or the Dutch brewer Heineken, Nestle reported a significant increase in its costs last year for raw materials, packaging, transport and energy.

  • Walmart reported better-than-expected quarterly profits as its reputation for affordability produced strong US sales growth during the holiday shopping season, offsetting the hit from higher costs.
